What Every Client Should Learn from their Hair Stylist

As a stylist, you’re not only providing a service, you’re also providing an experience. The experience the client has with you is what sets you apart from your competition. Aside from the pampering, the conversation, and the installation, the most important thing you can do for your client is to educate them on the care of their hair and their extensions. Based on our feedback from phone calls and social media posts, here are the most common questions asked by clients.

“Is there anything I should do to my hair extensions before bed?”

Yes. To avoid tangling and matting, you should put your hair extensions in a loose braid or wrap your hair with a headscarf that has a satin or silk lining (silk and satin are the best because they don’t absorb moisture and they also help keep your strands from rubbing together). If possible, aplly hair masks and deep conditioners at least once a week. They should be applied before going to bed to give the product more time to moisturize your extensions. As always, keep these conditioning products away from any beads, bonds, or tape.

“I don’t know if I’m brushing my hair correctly. How often should I brush it?”

Believe it or not, there is such a thing as over-brushing. Think about it, every time you run a brush through your hair, you’re pulling on the connection of your hair extensions. Even when you’re cautious, there is some light pulling involved. Brush only when necessary in a downward motion. Start by holding your hair extensions at your jaw line and move upward. Brush gently as you’re brushing around the roots.

“I had my hair colored the same day as installation. Is that why I’m experiencing unusual slippage?”

Yes. Having another treatment done on the same day as installations is not the best idea. This includes blow-outs, relaxers, keratin treatments, etc. Your hair should always be squeaky clean and free of any build up, which is why we strongly recommend using a clarifying shampoo and no conditioner on the day of your hair extension appointment. Chemicals from hair treatments such as hair color, additives in keratin treatments, and products used for blowouts can block the tape and bonds from adhering to your natural hair like they are supposed to. If you’re using I-Tip extensions, beads can also slip from coloring or other treatments.
