As hairstylists, we tend to get into routine so much that sometimes we forget to remind our clients how to care for their extensions properly. So much so that we forget even the smallest details to share with our first-time hair extension clients. We decided to tackle the most common mistakes we make as part of our daily hair routines that we aren’t aware are doing more harm than good.
If it’s too tight it’s not right. This is a quick ticket to slippage. You know that favorite slick ponytail you love to do on a girls night out? Or those quick, go-to buns for your gym workout sessions, or those manic mornings where you quickly tie your hair up in a bun? We’re not saying these styling options are bad at all— in fact, they are our favorites. But when you’re wrapping that hair tie around one too many times, it can actually cause some serious damage. The constant tugging on the connection of your hair extensions will lead to loose bonds, tape, or beads. We’re not saying to stop this styling favorite, just make sure it’s not too tight.
Over-brushing. Brushing your hair daily is obviously a must, but did you know over-brushing can lead to breakage and split ends? The constant stroking of a brush creates friction on your hair, therefore, making it more fragile. This is true for both natural hair and hair extensions with one exception—hair extensions tend to get matted if too much friction is applied. So when you brush, make sure it’s enough to make your hair neat and always brush with your hair extension brush.
Applying heat to wet hair. Before using your curling iron or your straightener, it’s always a good idea to apply a heat protectant. It turns into a bad idea if you don’t let the heat protectant sit for a while before touching it with heat. If you’re applying the heat protectant spray/oil right before using a heat tool, you’re basically placing wet hair into a heated barrel which is then frying your strands (the most damaging thing you can do to your hair). We suggest lightly spraying the protectant on your strands and waiting a minute or two. Also, don’t use a heat protectant that’s super oily because it’s not only going to take forever to absorb into your hair, it’s also going to weigh it down.
These tips should also be practiced on natural hair. After all, by keeping your natural hair healthy, hair extensions are easier to blend.
